London Welsh have further beefed up their pack with the signing of experienced second row Ian Nimmo.

The 28-year-old 6ft 7in forward, who weighs 120kg, joins Welsh after a short loan spell at London Irish.

Nimmo spent last season at Newport Gwent Dragons, where he made 22 appearances, and has plenty of Championship experience having previously spent two seasons at the Cornish Pirates.

He featured against Welsh in both legs of the 2012 Championship final and was named in the league’s Dream Team for 2011/12. In all, he made 60 appearances for the Pirates, scoring three tries.

“If you look at the period when the Pirates were at their best, when they beat Bristol and played Welsh in the final, Ian was the most outstanding player there,” said London Welsh head coach Justin Burnell.

“He came through the Leicester system and you can’t get away from the fact that he’s 6ft 7in and 120kg, which is music to my ears. It’s another statement of intent in moving London Welsh forward.

“We’re about recognising quality players at London Welsh, but not forgetting we’ve got good players within our squad. Ben West, a young unknown quantity out of Cinderford, came on at the weekend and did very well, but we’re giving Ian an opportunity.”

Harlow born, Nimmo represented Scotland at U18, U19 and U21 levels, and also lists Heriot's, Leicester Tigers, Coventry and Nottingham among his former clubs.
