Biography
Martin Purdy arrives at Old Deer Park with a wealth of rugby experience having played for Wasps, Bath, North Harbour and most recently L’Aquila in Italy.
Having played his early rugby with Sevenoaks RFC as well as captaining the 1st XV at The John Rudd School in Tonbridge, Purdy joined Wasps straight from school and signed a part-time academy contract while an undergraduate at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where gained a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering,
In 2000 he became the youngest forward to represent Cambridge in the Varsity Match at Twickenham in over a decade.
He agreed a full-time professional contract with Wasps in 2003 he went on to make 37 appearances in the Guinness Premiership and eight in the Heineken Cup, during which time he gained a reputation for his big hits and strong defence.
In 2004 Purdy played a crucial role in the Wasps side that lifted the Heineken Cup at Twickenham, playing in seven out of Wasps’ nine games in the competition.
Following seven years at Wasps he joined Bath in 2007, but after just a year at the Rec was approached by Craig Dowd in April 2008 to play in the Air New Zealand Cup for North Harbour along side Wasps’ Dave Walder and Munster’s Jeremy Manning. Later that year he joined Italian side L’Aquila Rugby.
He captained England at U18 and U21 and indeed skippered England at the 2002 U21 World Cup in South Africa, where his team-mates included Ben Gotting, Magnus Lund, Tom Voyce and Sam Vesty.
Born in Crawley, Sussex, Purdy’s first love was Aussie Rules, in particular the Sydney Swans, before he eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and turned to rugby. His father having played second row for Wasps in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Something of a sporting all rounder in his youth, Purdy also showed early promise with the willow, representing Kent at U17 level, and he also threw the javelin a county level.
