Biography
Mike Powell arrived at Old Deer Park in 2008 after two years at the Ospreys and immediately took on
the role of 1st XV captain.
But with no shortage of previous captaincy experience, starting with his university side and then Welsh
Students, before going on to lead Bridgend for two years and Ospreys A’s, it was something the towering second row forward took in his stride.
Mike joined Welsh after two seasons with the Ospreys for whom he made his debut in September 2006 against Borders Reivers. He would make a total of 22 appearances for the Ospreys.
Mike was also part of the Ospreys side that enjoyed a memorable 23-16 victory over Australia at a sellout
Liberty Stadium, and tasted Magners League success in 2006/07, as the Ospreys clinched the title with a 16-24 win over the Borders.
Mike began his London Welsh career by leading the club to victory over Connacht, having previously played against the Dragons for Exeter and Crawshays.
A good 2008 pre-season for Welsh culminated in a memorable 12-17 in Galway; a win made all the more special for Powell as he led the team out for the first time as the newly appointed 1st XV captain and, having failed to taste victory at the Sports Ground during
